Few people would have guessed that Oshawa, Ontario would provide one of R&Bs freshest faces in Daniel Caesar. Caesar’s debut LP, Freudian, dropped last year to wide critical acclaim, praised for providing a contemporary take on the grassroots of the genre. The choir-trained son of a Jamaican gospel singer, Caesar’s musical pedigree flows through his heartfelt, sensuous ballads. Freudian garnered support from everyone from Barack Obama to Kendall Jenner, earning Caesar two Grammy nominations: one for Best R&B Album and another for Best R&B Performance. On the cusp of his first world tour, Caesar wrote SSENSE a letter reflecting on his whirlwind ascent and his first trip to the Grammys. The letter is accompanied by a photo diary of the weekend’s festivities in New York, shot by his creative directors Sean Brown and Keavan Yazdani.
