LA-based studio Common Body marries conceptual practice with sustainable ethics in handcrafted candles and stoneware sculptures. Operated by multidisciplinary duo Nataniel and Kourtney Kyung Smith, the brand explores relationships between bodies and space with one-of-a-kind objects. Sculptural beeswax candles with smooth curvature reference mid-century motifs in their organic forms, while their textured holders are hand wrought in complementary dark stoneware clay. Respect for flora, fauna, and community is strongly felt throughout the brand’s sustainable practices. Family-run farms on the outskirts of Los Angeles provide Common Body’s environmentally friendly beeswax and organic cotton wicks. With consideration for broader climate impact, a tree is planted for each package sent in order to sustain a carbon neutral footprint. Satisfying both contemporary aesthetics and ethics, Common Body brings a holistic energy to candles and earthenware.
