A profound interest in the behavioural power of clothing has led American multimedia artist, Sterling Ruby, to establish S.R. STUDIO. LA. CA. The unisex ready-to-wear label is a continuation of Ruby’s artistic practice, one which seeks to dissolve the boundaries between art and fashion. Although best known for his powerful installation pieces, Ruby has been privately exploring clothing as a medium for expression for close to a decade, even having collaborated with Belgian designer Raf Simons on numerous projects for Dior and Calvin Klein. In his personal practice, many of his works integrate textile and quilted fabrics, further reflecting the artist-cum-designer’s sincere interest in material’s expressive potential. Launched in 2019, S.R. STUDIO. LA. CA. finds its roots in the West Coast’s historic denim industry, it’s utilitarian garments exposed to alternative dye, bleach, wash, and rinse processes. Handworked denim jackets, jeans, and lounge pants are crafted from specialized fabrics activated by the elements—heat, light, and time—while graphic t-shirts feature limited edition heat transfer prints and one-of-a-kind collages created by Ruby and sewn in his Los Angeles studio. Exuding an easy and laid-back appeal, S.R. STUDIO. LA. CA. offers wearable pieces that make a statement with their bold colors and loud patterns. As a mode of artistic expression, the brand seeks to engage the wearer by impacting the way they "think, feel, and move."
