Martyre

Translated from French, the word ‘martyre’ means ‘the suffering inflicted upon the martyr.’ Anwar Hadid and Yoni Laham, alongside co-creative director and head of design Ryan Benson, drew upon the deeper implications of this expression—the individual strength and dedication required to achieve a dream—when founding their men’s jewelry label Martyre. Recontextualizing ecclesiastical inspirations within contemporary culture, the trio injects symbolism back into jewelry by offering the wearer something more meaningful than a fashion object. Band rings engraved with phrases akin to prayers, cherub-adorned stud earrings, chain-link necklaces, and engraved cuff bracelets are all crafted from sterling silver in collaboration with skillful Californian artisans. As Martyre’s namesake suggests, the label’s collections are reflections on martyrdom: what one is willing to endure in order to achieve. Ultimately, Martyre reflects the triumph of the individual over the obstacles barring them from their goals, while reminding the wearer that everything comes at a cost: in this way, Hadid’s jewelry brand is realistically aspirational.
