Alaska-Alaska c/o Virgil Abloh™

Creative polymath Virgil Abloh widens an already diverse portfolio with his London-based design studio, Alaska-Alaska. Combining the multidisciplinary tenets of Bauhaus with contemporary culture, the American artist, designer, DJ, and architect—renowned for his fashion design at Off-White and Louis Vuitton menswear—unifies art, craft, and design through the studio’s modern approach to collaborative projects. Alaska-Alaska functions as an incubation center for emerging design talent by fostering the development of a young interdisciplinary team. In a limited-edition series, sculptural cardboard chairs were customized by four team members based on their respective cultural backgrounds. The geometric design objects feature visual motifs, color photographs, and stylized typography over a white or raw cardboard surface framed by contrasting strips of vinyl tape. Each chair, delivered as a simple flatpack with an instruction booklet and a roll of tape, needs to be assembled manually for a final sculptural artwork. Through Alaska-Alaska’s expansive projects, Abloh continues to redefine the boundaries of design by investing in a future without disciplinary limits.
