Gucci’s Urban Arcadia

Discovering Feng Li's Pastoral Shanghai

“The countryside stresses me out,” says Feng Li. Through avoiding the bucolic—and with the help of Gucci—the photographer creates his own definition of the word. Peeling paint on a concrete wall masquerades as lichen on a boulder. Clotheslines for leaning on, as one leans against a tree. The divergent textures of Shanghai mirror the sartorial microcosm that is Gucci—a GG Supreme motif is an uncanny mirror for the brindle sheen of a grayhound’s back, while the luster of emerald lurex highlights jade text stickered to a store-front window.

In a city whose population is nearly 25 million, where moments of repose are few and far between, Gucci functions as a lense through which we might catch a glimpse of playful requiescence. Often the greatest discoveries are made in the quotidian, you just need to learn how to see them. Gucci is the flicker in the dark, the uniform for the interurban odyssey.
