Section 8 takes its moniker from a controversial low-income housing system prevalent in New York. Since launching as an anonymous collective in 2017, the brand has kept people talking about such sociopolitical underpinnings, as well as its surreal day-to-night aesthetic. Stylist Akeem Smith has stepped forward as Section 8’s lead designer, delivering everyday pieces in uncommon materials and textures. Cutouts and distressing reminiscent of ʼ90s club attire are prominent, alongside the seemingly contradictory influence of business apparel. With its eccentric mash-ups of office and night-out looks, Section 8’s designs create intrigue and demand attention.
