S.R. STUDIO. LA. CA.

Having collaborated with Belgian designer Raf Simons on multiple projects for Dior and Calvin Klein 205W39NYC, American multimedia artist Sterling Ruby is now launching his own brand S.R. STUDIO. LA. CA. Although best known for his powerful installation pieces, Ruby has been quietly exploring clothing as a medium for expression for close to a decade, even exhibiting some of his experimental workwear designs in London in 2016. Various textiles and quilting feature prominently throughout Ruby’s oeuvre, further reflecting the artist-cum-designer’s profound interest in fabric’s expressive potential. Launched in 2019, S.R. STUDIO. LA. CA. finds its roots in the West Coast’s historic denim industry, it’s utilitarian garments exposed to alternative dye, bleach, wash, and rinse processes. Handworked denim jackets, jeans, and overalls are crafted from specialized fabrics activated by the elements—heat, light, and time—while graphic t-shirts feature limited edition heat transfer prints and one-of-a-kind collages created by Ruby and sewn in his Los Angeles studio. Offering wearable items that make a statement with their bold colors and loud patterns, S.R. STUDIO. LA. CA. is an exciting continuation of Ruby’s artistic practice, one which engages the wearer by impacting the way they "think, feel, and move."
