In 2009—the first year she was invited to Paris Fashion Week—Japanese designer Chitose Abe unveiled the menswear extension of her avant-garde label Sacai. Before the label's original 1999 launch date, Abe honed her technical prowess and keen experimental eye while working as a pattern cutter for Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo and Junya Watanabe. Abe’s technical deftness and expert ability to seamlessly splice disparate fabrics and textures into comprehensive silhouettes at once elegant and experimental quickly established Sacai as a fashion heavyweight.
