Walid Damirji weaves fragments of history into one-of-a-kind, sustainable couture. By Walid, the designer’s namesake label founded in 2011, is an intergenerational collaboration with craftsmen and artisans of the past. Antique textiles—eighteenth-century ecclesiastical embroideries, ancient furs, and Chinese silks to name a few—are rescued from obscurity and repurposed to serve a new vision. Floral patterns meet hard stripes and jagged houndstooth in endless patchwork combinations. Vivid embroidery and ornate beading adorn garments and footwear in tones reminiscent of summer dusk. The brand’s menswear staples, including casually draped trousers, loose buttoned shirting, and thick-strapped sandals, are stitched together with golden threads and asymmetrical seams. In Damirji’s hands, past and present coalesce in modern silhouettes that eschew fast fashion and disposable trends.
