Venczel
Copenhagen-based designer Matilda Venczel draws inspiration from the roots of leather-working, namely the practice of saddlery, to craft her sculptural, almost abstract handbags and accessories. After graduating from the Antwerp Academy, Venczel worked for numerous ready-to-wear fashion brands, but chose to shift her focus toward accessories to launch her eponymous label. Inspired by the universal accessibility and freedom of accessories, which don’t require a specific look or body-type to be worn, this sense of unbridled liberty is reflected in the brand’s designs. Its handbags, cross-body bags, and clutches feature bold structural shapes and oblique lines that suggest familiar forms while remaining slyly subversive. Striking oversized chain-link shoulder straps and chunky buckle accents offer a contemporary counterpoint to Venczel’s otherwise organic signature vegetable tanned leather. This tanning process, which highlights the natural imperfections of the leather, speaks to Venczel’s artisanal approach and commitment to slow-form, sustainable production. Within a fast-paced fashion world, Venczel offers unique accessories that remind us of the value in taking our time.
